This past weekend was spent 'camping' within a stones throw of the allegedly haunted ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, in Llangollen, Wales.... as mentioned / visited in our previous post on this blog. Unfortunately, it would appear that the campsite concerned has a very strict 'no trespassing' warning re. the ruins.... and anyone found within the confines of the Abbey after dark will, it seems, be asked to immediately leave the site!! (Be warned!!) As a result any observations of the place had to be carried out 'from a distance'......
Still - Llangollen town itself offers an array of 'other' spooky sites for the visitor, including the beautiful 'Plas Newydd' - probably the most famous haunted property in the region - and the 'Hand Hotel', which supposedly contains no less than 5, different ghosts! Not far away is the magnificent 'Tyn Dwr Hall', said to be haunted by the apparition of a woman in a rustling dress and a former gamekeeper to the house.....
A considerable portion of our Sunday morning and afternoon was taken up scaling the impressive hill to Castell Dinas Bran - Crow Castle, in English - an Iron Age hill fort, with later, Medieval (13th Cent.), castle ruins situated on top of it. (Pic Above).
The site, a scheduled, ancient monument, commands some of the most beautiful views and scenery in Wales! As people might imagine, there is a vast amount of folklore associated with the spot, despite the fact that, as a castle, the fortification was only in use for a very limited amount of time, during the latter part of the 1200's. Some sources say as little as 20 years......
Just some of the legends associated with the spot include references from Arthurian Legend - links to the 'Holy Grail' once again - love stories, tales of battles with warlike giants and also fairy manifestations.......
